Grant County Historical Society
Research Information
In addition to the genealogy services the Grant County Historical Society offers (see our
Research Materials Available
and
Request for Information
form), many records are available at the Grant County Courthouse for research.
Vital records for birth, death, and marriages can be obtained from the Register of Deeds Office. However, a form for each record must be filled out, signed and notarized; or a copy of your ID must be forwarded with request. These records are $10 and can be requested from the Register of Deeds, Grant County Courthouse, 210 E. Fifth Avenue, Milbank, SD 57252. That office will mail or fax you the appropriate form to complete and return along with a cashier's check or mail order for the amount required and a self-addressed, business-size, stamped return envelope.
If you have a South Dakota Genealogy Society card, you can research the records on your own in person or have someone who has a card such as the Grant County Historical Society do it for a fee. You will still have to fill out a form for each vital record. A form is not required for land, deed, or mortgage records. They are available at a charge of $1.00 per copy. If you wish to obtain a South Dakota genealogy card, you can request one from the South Dakota Genealogy Society, 501 S. First Avenue, Flandreau, South Dakota 57028. All that is needed to obtain a card is your name and $5.00.
The Auditor's Office at the courthouse also has county school records. The Clerk of Court's office has probate records. A form is required from that office to obtain these.
Grant County cemetery records are also available at the Register of Deeds, and the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home and Mundwiler Funeral Home in
Milbank keep burial records, too.
The
Grant County Library
has many resources for genealogy along with microfilmed newspapers.
